Growing up on the outskirts of Las Vegas as the daughter of notorious strip club owner, Stephen Knox, and a mother who abandoned her at birth, life was less than kind to a young Antoinette. After a failed teenage suicide attempt, Toni hit the road in search of a life free of undeserved cruelty and any resemblance to her past. Years later, Toni is lost in a dead end marriage and makes a painful confession that sends her back to the one place she always wanted to escape. But can she really right the wrongs that haunt her? Toni soon finds that the only place where things stay the same is in your mind. When her path crosses with David Stark, childhood playmate turned one night stand, she cannot deny the spike in temperature she feels every time he's near or the scorching dreams that flood her at night. Digging through the years of heartache, Toni soon finds herself torn between the man she is committed to and the one who has always held her heart. As each layer unfolds before her, she discovers the root cause of her pain. Always believing the source was external, nothing could prepare her for the truth.

***sorry - some minor spoilers below***

Toni Knox grew up in a very unconventional way. Her father is owner of a night club (they are just outside of Vegas, so the locals are not unfamiliar with this type of thing) and no mother.
Toni's best friend and the guy that was her first, is David Stark.
The book begins with David and Toni having sex (with each other) for the first time, something happens and we find that Toni is so distraught that she attempts suicide - then leaves her home town (and her father) promising never to return.

Fast forward 12 years later. Toni is in a marriage where her husband hasn't attempted to have sex with her for four years. They barely speak and they barely have a relationship anymore. Thankfully there are no kids.
Toni rushes back home due to a major heart stroke that her father has.
In the 12 years that has passed, David was gone and has been back home for a couple of years, helping her father with the night club.

So the relationship between Toni and David pick up immediately. It's not friendly at first.

Okay, I think I gave away enough to get a sense of the story.
I love sarcasm and nutty people. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the banter and the dialogue in this book. It's snarky. It's immature. It's so funny.
So 10 stars for the great bantering. The priest is even funny!
There are some great moments with Toni, when she gets back to the night club to see how things are going (since her dad is in the hospital) - she really shakes things up. It's great fun to read. Go Toni!

The problem is the general plot and the depth of the relationship between Toni and David.
The flashbacks to their childhood are also 10 stars ratings.
They are adorable kids. I have to remember that they are growing up right outside of Vegas, so things may be a little different.
But they grew up BFFs and their childhood memories are vivid and heart-warming.

So when we read about Toni running away from her home town - it is surprising at how close David and Toni were, that she wouldn't attempt to reconcile with him, to try to talk with him about upset she was, or at least see him, punch him in the stomach, THEN leave town. It just didn't fit her profile.
Also, Toni, for how sassy, snarky and strong she is, she cries a lot in this book. I think it was the mechanism used by the author to give David a chance to be the hero, but she just seemed to do it A LOT.

So my 1 star rating is for the relationship. The author doesn't write much about how they grow their relationship as adults. They seem to fall mainly on their past feelings. Yes, David does a lot for Toni (helping in various ways), but he seems to take a back seat to her own growth (with her dad, with her town, with her husband, etc). They banter. They have major sexual tension. They kiss. But there doesn't seem to be any meaningful dialogue on an ongoing basis to show how they fall in love as adults, with such pain in their past. He does explain things, but explaining is different than moving forward with a relationship.
The depth of their current lives together just wasn't a big part of the book.
So that was a big downer for me.

I gave it 4 stars overall because I enjoyed the bantering and the descriptions of various light hearted interactions with people so much that I will definitely read this book again if I need a pick me up.
But if you are looking for a deeper romance, this is not for you.
A light-hearted fun fluffy romance, with some sad moments (but not terribly so), with immature, fun, flirty, silly, witty, sarcastic bantering - this is the book for you.

A nice HEA. (one thing - how do you have sex in a penalty box with a ton of kids on the ice)???
No cliffhanger
If there is another in a series, I don't want to read it.

Enjoy!

Rotten J L Brooks Books Reviews

Toni grew up as a bullied young girl since her father owned a strip club in Vegas. Everyone just assumed that she was disgusting & perverted like her old man, except for David, a young boy her father took under his wing. Toni & David grew up together with David finally showing Toni what love is all about, being her first in every way possible. What David did next led Toni down a destructive spiral that kept her from her father & David for 12 years. David told Toni not to tell anyone about their little tryst as teenagers & it broke Toni completely, even though later we find the reasoning behind David's cold words. Toni ran off to attend college in Indianapolis, meets a nice man & settles down, turning to religion to calm her lustful thoughts. Her husband is on medication which makes it impossible for him to have sex, for over 4 years! There are just a few odd things about this book that stop me from giving it 5 full stars & this is one of them. What the heck? And then when Toni returns to Vegas to take care of her dying father, her personality completely changes back to the girl she once was which I found odd. Split personalities much? Anyway still an amazing story! Toni finds out many things about her father, one big secret being that he financed many of the activities around their town, basically keeping business alive. She starts working in the strip club & comes to respect the business. Her father let his house go to shambles so while he is in the hospital she recruits the help of many people in the community to get the house repaired. But what really made this book fantastic was the love that David & Toni had for each other - rough around the edges, worn by years of mistrust & pain, but a connection that time couldn't separate. At first Toni isn't able to pursue anything, feeling loyal to a husband who doesn't really even check to make sure she is ok in Vegas. When Toni goes home to try to resolve her feelings she finds out her husband has been lying to her & it gives her the kind of closure she needs to reconsider a relationship with David. They don't have the perfect love but it is hot & real & even sweet & caring at times. Loved it!
I feel bad that I'll be the first to give this three stars. I think it tried to be deeper than it was, but the character development just wasn't there. In high school, Toni has a secret relationship and kids pick on her, this is kind of dribbled out throughout the story. The issues aren't really explored very deeply so Toni's reaction seems extreme. Jump ahead and Toni's marriage has one problem and she is ready to call it quits (yet she is sometimes Catholic). So there's the set up for going back to her high school days of low self-esteem and the super hot guy she left behind. I found the book a little boring (why did this girl sleep so much in the first half?) because it has all those predictable tropes of stories like these. There were many misunderstandings that could have been quickly cleared up if the mc didn't immediately overreact. And she worried so much that David didn't like her even though she was staying at his house (and sleeping in his bed) for weeks. I also didn't appreciate her hypocrisy of how she treated her husband. Overall, she was unlikable for me. And when the H/h are together, they act like young teenagers--I think they were supposed to be shocking or bold, but mostly they were immature.
The writing was okay, a few sentences are awkward, but decent editing otherwise. Rotten may have been meant for more of a YA audience, so if you haven't read many romances, you may like this.
